Head Start Program

“Head Start" is a comprehensive child development program serving pre-school aged children and their families in several locations.  It is a child-focused program that has the overall goal of increasing the social competence of young children in low income families.  It is family-centered, following the tenets that children develop in the context of their family and culture  and that parents are respected as the primary educators and nurturers of their children” — Head Start Performance Standards.

SEVCA’s Windsor County Head Start program continues a steady growth and now serves children and families in South Royalton, White River Junction,  Wilder, Windsor, Bridgewater, Ludlow, Springfield, Chester and their surrounding areas.  We operate four center based programs serving eighty seven children families.

The strength of our programs  can be attributed to the solid partnerships formed within our communities.  Donated services are provided by local doctors, businessmen, parents, health care providers and many others.  Through these partnerships, we are able to  provide not only an educational experience, but a wide range of comprehensive services including  health and dental screenings, nutritional services, family support and training and special services for children with disabilities.

Each center has a teacher, teacher assistant, and food service provider (unless food is provided by the school district) on staff. Also on staff is a Family Services Specialist who provides assistance to families.

“Unless the investment in children is made, all of humanity’s most fundamental long-term problems will remain fundamental long-term problems.” -UNICEF “The State of the Children” (1995)
